Can you believe it? SIDEWALKS ENTERTAINMENT’s “official” 400th cable episode premieres this week on the series’ home station, KCRT-TV.
The program first went on Northern Calfornia’s cable TV screens in September 1988 as a local San Francisco Bay Area talent showcase. As time went on, the Sidewalks name continued, but the series morphed into a celebrity interview series with features on local talents and music videos. Currently, the series can be seen to over 2-plus million viewers throughout Northern & Central California and in Manitowoc, WI on Comcast Hometown Network, as well as KCRT-TV (Ch. 28) and Fairfield’s CA’s Channel 27, among others. In late 2009, Sidewalks had its first broadcast special on San Francisco’s KOFY-TV20.
According to creator, producer, and occasional host Richard R. Lee, the long-running show had a number of specials throughout the years that are not counted in the official tally.
“The total is actually slightly higher,” says Lee, 44. “I recounted a couple of years ago, and I made certain episodes as official. Regardless, four-hundred episodes are remarkable for a regional series like this. Not just for the incredible amount of celebrities that have appeared on the show, but the series is only produced by a small number of people and one editor.”
A number of key people has been with Sidewalks for a lengthy time. Lee, who started appearing in front of the camera in 1997, has been the sole editor of the episodes since day one with some segments edited by other individuals. Long-time host / producer Cindy Rhodes has been with the show since 1993, while the other mainstay, host Rafael Siegel, joined in 1994 (Siegel has been off-and-on and recently left for a full-time hosting position in another state). Another face that is gaining years with the show is Maaika Westen, who became an on-air personality three years ago. Head videographer J.P. Langston and music producer Dwayne Sparks joined the show behind-the-scenes around 2005/2006. Additionally, since 2005, East coast singer/musician/songwriter Jeryl Orsino of From The Desk of Sally fame has been supplying her music for the show’s opening theme and background music.
The landmark episode features I Dream of Jeannie’s star Barbara Eden and Silk Stalkings lead Mitzi Kapture. Rhodes interviews Eden as she promotes her new memoir, “Jeannie Out of The Bottle,” while Lee talks to Kapture at the recent WonderCon event.
On KCRT-TV in the east bay side of the San Francisco Bay Area, the episode premieres Monday (4/11) at 7PM, with encores on Tuesday, 4/12 at 3:30PM, Friday, 4/15 at 12 Midnight and 7:30AM, and Saturday, 4/16 at 10:30AM.
The new episode is coming soon to the show’s other affiliates around the country.
